LOVE IN THE SHADOWS - PART 2

 

EPISODE 3: INTO THE UNKNOWN

Adesewa slid into the SUV, her heartbeat drumming against her ribs. The leather seat felt cool against her damp skin as Dimeji shut the door and pulled into the road.

Silence filled the car, thick with unspoken questions. The city lights blurred past as they sped through Lagos.

“Where are we going?” she finally asked.

“Somewhere safe,” Dimeji said, his tone unreadable.

“That’s not an answer.”

He sighed, gripping the steering wheel. “Adesewa, I need you to trust me.”

She almost laughed. Trust? With a stranger who knew her name, claimed to be watching over her, and now had her in his car, speeding into the unknown?

She folded her arms. “Trust is earned.”

Dimeji glanced at her, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. “Fair enough. Ask me anything.”

She took a deep breath. “Who asked you to watch over me?”

His fingers tightened around the wheel. He hesitated, as if weighing his words.

“Your brother.”

Her chest tightened. “That’s impossible.”

Dimeji exhaled. “I know.”

Because her only brother, Tunde, had been dead for three years.

EPISODE 4: THE DEAD DON’T TALK

Adesewa’s breath hitched. “That’s impossible. My brother is dead.”

Dimeji kept his eyes on the road. “I know.”

She turned fully to face him. “Then stop lying. Who really sent you?”

He sighed. “Tunde. Your brother. Before he died, he left instructions for me to watch over you.”

Her head spun. “I don’t understand.”

Dimeji slowed the car and parked on a quiet street. He turned to her. “Three years ago, Tunde got into something dangerous. He tried to protect you by keeping you out of it. But before he died, he knew it wasn’t over. He made sure someone would be there for you when the time came.”

She shook her head. “What was he involved in?”

Dimeji hesitated. “Something bigger than you think. And now, they know who you are.”

Adesewa’s hands trembled. “Who are they?”

Dimeji looked out the window. “The people who killed him.”
